Sézane Founder Embarks on New Chapter, Slowing Growth for More Intentional Approach

Morgane Sézalory, the founder of French fashion brand Sézane, is entering a new era for her company. The 42-year-old entrepreneur says this phase better reflects where she is in her life. She will unveil the vision for this next chapter in a manifesto for customers, set to be released on Wednesday, along with a teaser of the first collection. A revamped logo and website will debut on August 19.

Sézalory's journey with Sézane began 18 years ago, when she started a vintage thrift store on eBay. The brand evolved organically as she grew, with no initial business plan or strategy. "It's just this crazy, limitless energy I have," she explains. "I felt like I was seven years old when I created a company without realizing I was creating a company."

Today, Sézane has several hundred employees across its French headquarters and 23 stores in France, the US, the UK, and Spain. During this time, Sézalory has had three children, faced personal losses, and navigated her mother's cancer diagnosis, all of which have shaped her perspective.

The new Sézane will be characterized by a slower, more intentional approach. "I decided to stop the rhythm. I really said, 'OK, we are going to stop the growth,'" Sézalory says. The brand will release new items on a monthly cadence, but with a more curated selection.

This shift comes as Sézane's mainstream success peaks globally. The Parisian fashion house has found its stride in recent years with its French girl aesthetic and accessible yet elevated market positioning, falling between premium and affordable brands. Young women in their 20s and 30s have been drawn to Sézane's lace button-downs, knit sweaters, totes, and prairie dresses for their work and weekend wardrobes.

However, Sézalory believes it's time to evolve and mature the brand. "It's a reflection of me growing up. I feel like I've been in school for 20 years, and now I'm ready to actually launch Sézane with awareness and intention," she says. "Before, the story was so spontaneous and instinctive and organic and without any time or even desire to step back and really look at it and think about it."

Sézalory remains Sézane's largest stakeholder, with minority investors General Atlantic and Téthys joining the company in 2018 and 2022, respectively. As the brand enters this new chapter, it aims to maintain its appeal while embracing a more thoughtful, considered approach to growth and product development.
