B6 isn’t a single molecule; it’s a group of related compounds, with pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP) being its biologically active form. This acts as a coenzyme, participating in over 100 biochemical reactions. The most important takeaway? Many of these reactions are involved in converting protein, fat, and carbohydrates into usable energy.

The vitamin’s influence extends far beyond energy production. It’s found in a wide variety of both animal- and plant-based foods, including poultry, meat, eggs, legumes, whole grains, oatmeal, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Tuna, salmon, chicken breast, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, bananas, and potatoes are particularly excellent sources.
The recommended daily intake for adults is around 1.4 to 1.6 milligrams. While many people get enough from their diet, supplementation might be considered, especially during pregnancy or times of increased physical demand. However, high doses over extended periods can lead to adverse effects like numbness and tingling. “If you’re considering high-dose vitamin B6 supplementation, it’s important to measure your levels both before starting and while taking it,” Mensching cautions.
