Rhea Seehorn Says 'Pluribus' Isn't About AI, Despite AI Comparisons

Apple TV’s psychological drama, “Pluribus,” is garnering significant Emmy buzz with eighteen nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. The series, centered around an alien parasite merging humans into a collective consciousness, has sparked discussions About its potential commentary on artificial intelligence.

The AI Connection

Rhea Seehorn, the show’s Emmy-nominated star, acknowledged the AI interpretations during an interview with Deadline. When asked about the series’ similarities to generative AI, she admitted she hadn’t consciously considered it while filming.

“I knew that Vince doesn’t write in themes,” Seehorn stated. “I also knew that he’s been mulling over some of these questions about humanity, society, all of the plethora of questions that the show brings up for 10-plus years.”

Focus on Character

Seehorn explained that she was so focused on embodying her character, Carol, that she largely avoided thinking about potential thematic readings. “I was surprised when we started doing the press junkets and people were bringing up, ‘Oh, this is a commentary on AI, right?’” she said. “I get it now and I know I look like an idiot, but I try very hard not to think about how I want it to be interpreted.”

The actress also noted that some viewers interpreted the series as a metaphor for depression and isolation, sentiments she found resonant. She also discussed the season 1 ending, featuring Carol obtaining an atomic bomb, and her lack of knowledge regarding the show’s future direction.
